Get To Know Sam

Sometimes the about me section blurb doesn’t do it, so here is a little bit more about me….

Getting to know my clients through their booking process and sessions is one of my favorite parts about what I do. Every time I book a new client or attend a session I feel like I am making a new friend! And as someone who got in trouble throughout school for socializing instead of learning, it makes sense thats my favorite part!

I wanted to take some time and share more about me, so that as you look through my work, you get to know the person behind the photos! Often times when you are behind the camera you dont get in front of the camera! So here is a look into who I am, what I love and everything that makes me a goober and well, me!

The Fur Baby

Meet Mia, our 15 year old Chihuahua/ poodle mix often lovingly called a Chapoodle! JD’s family got Mia as a puppy when he was 15 years old. When JD and I started dating, Mia and I were obsessed with each other. If I was at his house, Mia was within 2 ft at all times. Everyone often joked about what would happen with Mia if JD and I ever broke up- and she wasn’t event my dog!! When I moved to Boone for college, JD’s family thought it was only fair for Mia to be in Boone too because we missed each other too much. So in April of 2015 she officially became mine. Since then Mia has moved 5 times with us, watched us get married (she even had her own wedding outfit that day!) and its safe to say were obsessed with her. Even at 14 years old, she’s still the sweetest, funniest and cutest pup that we love in every way!

Travel & Adventures

I am one of those people that love to be busy and on the move! So it makes sense that one of my favorite things to do is travel and be outdoors! In high school I started traveling a lot with service projects in our state, then slowly to surrounding states, and then my Junior year out of the country to Mexico. It was during those trips I truly fell in love with traveling and going to new places, experiencing new things and meeting new people. My senior year of college I went to Europe for 2 weeks and even though I didn’t know it was possible, fell in love with traveling even more. When I came back to the states, we created lots of bucket list places to travel to both stateside and internationally. We dreamed up our ultimate travel goal, which is to visit all 60 US National Parks. Every year we cross 3-5 new parks off our list and its truly the best feeling. I fell in love with being outdoors when I lived in Boone, NC . Its hard not to love being outside when your backyard is literally the Blue ridge Mountains. All my favorite things involve being outdoors and I think that has a lot to do with those mountains I will always call home.

The Love Story

When people ask about how JD and I met and how long we have been together I always laugh, as I know I have to tell them we are a cliche. JD and I met when we were 16 and were best friends as we were in the same friend groups our junior and senior years of High School. In our senior year, my Dad swears there was “No way we were just friends” but we truly were. As the year went on, I guess things started to change and one thing lead to another and now were married lol. So yes, we are high school sweethearts. We dated all throughout college and married the same year I graduated. We have now been together over a decade and married 5 of those 10 years. We are best friends who love to go on outdoor adventures, travel, cook, create, eat dessert, play board games, garden, spoil our dog and many other things. We are constantly on the move and wouldn’t have it any other way. We are opposites that truly complete the other and think thats what makes us the best team.

Falling In Love With Photography

Growing up my Mom and Grandmother had these huge boxes and albums of old photos from so many different timeframes in our families lives. I loved bringing them all out, sitting on the floor and looking through them, asking questions and learning about everyone. To this day its one of my favorite things to do with my family. I think about how in the moment my family members probably didn’t think much of the photo they were taking, but now 20, 30+ years later, here we are on the living room floor reliving their favorite memories. I didn’t know it then, but thats when I fell in love with photography. When I went to college I honestly thought I was going to study political science and become some international correspondent. I took a photo class for fun and the professor asked if I ever considered doing photos professionally. I laughed, blew it off and went about the semester studying politics. It took one semester to realize that was not the path for me and his question lingered enough that I ended up changing my major entirely that year….to Commercial Photography. If I didn’t know I loved photos before, I knew for sure after my first semester as a Com Photo student. I am so glad that professor asked me that question. It changed my whole life.

The photo that caused my professor to ask me If I wanted to be a professional photographer…that fall I entered this photo into the fair for fun and it won first place. That was the week I officially changed my major.

Living The Dream

The goal and dream when in school was to always own and opperate my own wedding and portrait photography business. I worked towards that goal while in school and after graduation. For 5+ years after graduation I worked on learning and growing and building that business. This spring I was blessed enough to go full time with that business and its been the best adventure of my life. Waking up daily and doing what you love is truly the best feeling in the world. When I see behind the scenes photos from sessions, its then that I truly remember the magic of what I am doing. Documenting the important memories for other people and their families for years to come is something that I love and consider an honor. I hope 20 years from now, they sit on the floor with their photo boxes, and look at the photos I captured for their family and talk about how fun it was.

Thanks for reading along! I hope this helps you to know me a bit more! It has been a blast sharing with you what makes me, ME!

With Love,

Sam
